The items in the list are needed for the improvement of our existing academic programs, research and extension activities. In response to national manpower plan, K+12 and stakeholders’ satisfaction surveys, we are currently undergoing curricular revisions. Institution of more practical animal science courses like feed processing technology, feed formulation, product and by product processing, welfare and ethics, vitamin and mineral nutrition, and agricultural entrepreneurship are some of the improvements proposed. Part of course content development is the collaborative efforts with the industry players for a more authentic learning experience through educational trips to farms and feed mills.

Fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC)

Estimated cost: P4.0M 

Fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) is protein chromatographic system that is necessary for protein isolation that can be used developing/isolation functional protein for animal production.

International mobility training for students

Estimated cost: 5M/year

Competitiveness of our students requires exposures to international training. This requires collaborative training agreement with universities and international research agencies. The conduct of research of graduate students can be done in other countries possessing specializations in specific fields. This will mean better training and research outputs for the students and the University. The fund is for the travel, insurance and living cost of student during the international training.

Refrigerated Centrifuge (70000 rpm)

Estimated cost: 2.0M

Refrigerated centrifuge are needed for various laboratory protocols. Currently, we don’t have centrifuge with larger volumes.

Freeze Dryer Cabinet Type (7 cubic feet)

Estimated cost: P1.2M

Freeze drying is essential for samples that containing heat sensitive compounds that needs for concentrated by drying. ADSC need a freeze dryer for amino acid digestibility studies.

Total Mixed Ration Mixer (500 kgs)

Estimated cost: P2.0M

Uniformity per unit weight of dairy rations and thus efficient nutrient delivery to the animals is necessary for persistent milk production. This can be achieved by uniformly mixing all dietary components through a ‘total mixed ration’ (TMR) production facility. This involved mixing of chopped roughage or silage to concentrate feeds and other additives then packing them for delivery to the farmers. It necessary that the TMR facility is in strategic location close to roughage production area or silage making facility, the feedmill as source of concentrate and the dairy farmers.

Waters Aquity Mass Spectrophotometer Detector

Estimated cost: 5.0M

ADSC is also positioning itself to become the “National Center for Feed and Food Animal Safety”. Proper use of compounds in feed and for other animal production activities needs to be checked by an unbiased institution for proper usage. Appropriate withdrawal period for example in the case antibiotic needs thorough monitoring. The lack of facilities that can ultimately quantify regulated compounds in feed and food animal post risks to consumers.

Rehabilitation of Slaughter House

Estimated cost: 24.0M

The cluster is prospecting to be “Center for Animal Product Processing in the Country”. This entails the need for the rehabilitation of our 30-year-old meat science facility. The project to revitalize the facility will strengthen or training and extension activities of the cluster and researches on primary and secondary processing of animal product and by-product utilization.

Ruminant and Monogastric Animal Metabolism Houses

Estimated cost: P6.0M

Metabolism houses are needed to conduct a more controlled experimentation that will ensure accurate measurement of nutrient intake and excretion of a given animal. Nutrition experiments that require metabolism houses/stalls include nutrient balance studies that are historically helpful in determining the feeding values of raw materials, nutrient digestibility studies and even new feed designs and programs. Updating nutrient values used in feed formulation as one product such studies will result in better utilization of macro materials and additives. ADSC currently has some stalls for ruminant, swine and poultry but requires additional units that are ideally placed in a building/house.

Animal Quarantine Buildings

Estimated cost: P4.0M

Farm animals for instructional and experimental use need to be isolated for at least two weeks prior to placement in the farm. Housing the animal in a quarantine facility will ensure that stocks from outside the ADSC farm are not sick. The buildings for quarantine will be composed of ruminant, swine and poultry houses.

Fermentation Set-up System and Enzyme Laboratory (including enzyme working bench: spectrophotometer, protein purification and isolation equipment)

Estimated cost: P8.5M 

Particularly interesting field of study is the development of feed enzymes specific for the locally available non-conventional raw materials. The presence of facilities like the Philippines National Collection for Microorganism (PNCM) here at UPLB will be able us to search for home grown feed enzymes that will help us properly utilize locally available feed stuffs. Screening of microorganism from environmental samples, animal (rumen) and plant origins for potential candidate enzymes are necessary for this purpose. 

Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS)

Estimated cost: P6.5M 

The use of wet-lab based analytical procedures for proximate and ultimate tests of nutrients in feedstuffs and finished feeds is still relevant especially in training our students. The results in these tests generated through-out decades of analyses could have been better utilized for calibrating more efficient equipment like Near Infra-red Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS).
