Dairy researches conducted at DTRI receive awards in the 54th PSAS Convention

The 54th Philippine Society of Animal Science (PSAS) Convention was held last October 18-21, 2017 at Bayfront Hotel Cebu, Cebu City. With  the theme “Animal Productivity and Food Safety: Enhancing Safe and Healthy Animal-based Products”,

the convention once again successfully provided opportunities for people involved in the field of veterinary and animal sciences to further their knowledge and showcase their achievements and discoveries.

Three scientific papers from the Dairy Training and Research   Institute (DTRI), College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS), UPLB , won as best papers. These were as follows:

1. Undergraduate Thesis Category: Herbage dry matter yield, nutritive composition and in vitro gas production of Mulato II and Mombasa grasses at 30- and 45- day cutting interval presented by Thalia J. Bacorro (Research Staff, Dairy Training and Research Institute/DTRI). Researchers :  Thalia J. Bacorro, Patricia B. Reyes, Menandro M. Loresco and Amado A. Angeles

2. Nutrition Category:  Response of growing dairy calves to starter diets with varying energy and protein levels presented by Gleeza L. Manulat (Research Staff, DTRI) Researchers:    Gleeza L.,  Manulat, Cesar C. Sevilla, Florinia E. Merca and Amado A. Angeles

3. Production and Processing Category: Conjugated linoleic acid production of Lactobacillus plantarum Biotech 1066 in milk presented by  Angelo M. Tapia (Assistant Professor , Institute of Animal Science and Affiliate Researcher, DTRI) Researchers: Angelo M. Tapia,  Jose Arceo N. Bautista, Bernadette C. Mendoza, Laura J. Pham,  Ione G. Sarmago and Maria Cynthia R. Oliveros

In addition to the above papers, three current researches being conducted at DTRI were also presented in scientific posters during the convention, namely:

2. Effects of feeding high density- and low density-total mixed ration on the yield and composition of milk of Holstein-Sahiwal cows presented by Menandro M. 3.Herbage dry matter yield and nutritive composition of Mulato II and Mombasa and close relative species in pure stand or as mixture with arachis and centrosema presented by Mr. Menandro M. Loresco (University Researcher, DTRI)
