DTRI Celebrates its 55th Anniversary

With the theme, “Revitalizing DTRI Research and Extension Functions for a Vibrant Dairy Industry”, the Dairy Training and Research Institute marked its 55th Anniversary last November 8-9, 2017 at DTRI and at the Institute of Animal Science (IAS). The 2-day celebration included DTRI team building activities, UPLB dairy research forum and a stakeholders’ consultation.

In the morning of the first day, there was a team building activity which was highlighted by DTRI Staff flag raising ceremony, games and boodle fight. DTRI Director, Dr. Amado A. Angeles, Dr. Elpidio M. Agbisit, Jr., IAS Director, and Dr. Enrico P. Supangco, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Food Science gave inspirational messages.

In the afternoon, the UPLB dairy research Forum was conducted to encourage future research collaborations between DTRI and several UPLB Units. It was attended by Research Coordinators from the Agricultural Systems Institute (ASI), Institute of Human Nutrition and Food - College of Human Ecology (IHNF-CHE), College of Public Affairs (CPAf), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship - College of Economics and Management (DAME-CEM), together with DTRI research affiliates from IAS and representatives from Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Co. (UNAHCO). Before the open discussion, Dr. Angeles and Mr. Menandro M. Loresco discussed the “Status of the Philippine Dairy Industry” and “DTRI Research and Extension Activities through the Years” respectively. In their speeches, Dr. Angeles encouraged everyone to contribute and assist in the improvement of the local dairy industry, while Mr. Loresco presented decades of DTRI’s involvement in the development of dairy research and extension.

Some of the suggested objectives were:

1. to adapt some dairy production management system from other countries;

2. to do studies regarding policies affecting the dairy subsector; and

3. to do market-oriented researches

The DTRI stakeholders’ consultation followed on the next day. DTRI’s research and extension involvements, status of the dairy farmers and the role of DTRI in dairy development were discussed. Around 44 participants attended the consultation composed of: DTRI and IAS Staff and Faculty, with representatives from Government/Funding Agencies like National Dairy Authority (NDA), Philippine Carabao Center (PCC-UPLB), Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), PCAARRD, and DOST-IVA; small hold dairy farmers, owners of dairy multiplier farms (DMF’s), dairy cooperative officers from Southern Luzon and representatives from UNAHCO. The participants shared their views which areas in dairy research and extension, DTRI and other agencies can work together for the development of the local dairy industry. Dr. Angeles also proposed the establishment of a dairy research advisory council.

Among the important challenges discussed were:

1. sustainable feeding program

2. waste management

3. pasture area availability

As the 2-day event concluded, Dr. Angeles expressed his gratitude and informed the participants of future consultations to help improve the Philippine dairy industry.
