DTRI conducts mid-year dairy courses

The Dairy Training and Research Institute (DTRI), in coordination with the UPLB-Foundation, Inc., conducted three mid-year short training courses. These courses were all held at DTRI. For the course for dairy farm workers, on the last day, the trainees were brought to a private dairy farm in Tiaong, Quezon for them to see their animals and facilities and to have a chance to observe their farm management practices.

The courses conducted by DTRI were as follows:

Topics covered are dairy herd management, reproductive physiology, dairy microbiology and chemistry and other related topics.  June 13-23  13 senior Veterinary Medicine students of Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF), San Carlos City, Pangasinan
Short Course on Dairy Products Manufacture at Home Principles of processing of different dairy products which can be manufactured at home. These products are liquid milk, yoghurt, white cheese, mozzarella cheese, ice cream and pastillas de leche. Basic Training Course for Dairy Farm Workers This course is a combination of lecture and practicum covering the basic topics on dairy production and management with more emphasis on animal care and milking activities for those who will be involved in actual farm work.

 1st batch: June 27 to July 1

2nd batch: July 3-7

1st batch : 9 trainees; 2nd batch: 13 trainees (majority are applying for work in dairy farms abroad)

The Specialized Training Course on Dairy Cattle Management is a regular course conducted by DTRI for the senior Vet Med students in other SCU’s. This year, only VMUF sent their students (13) for the course, of whom six are of Indian nationality. All of them successfully completed the course. The Short Course on Dairy Products Manufacture at Home was attended by five trainees (entrepreneurs, mothers, LGU officer ) who came from Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas. One trainee was an officer of an LGU who supports the dairy projects in her area.

The two batches of the Basic Training Course for Dairy Farm Workers were participated by twenty two (22) individuals who came not only from Laguna but also from MetroManila, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija and Cavite. Majority of them have no experience or knowledge in animal production especially in dairy production while a few have some experience in poultry, swine or goat production. Most of the trainees are interested to apply for work in New Zealand as dairy farm workers. With the very strict requirement of New Zealand for applicants in dairy farms, these trainees still have to undergo a longer practical training or employment in local dairy farms before they are qualified for the job.
